January is the start of a brand new year. With this new year, you may consider making personal changes to your life. One aspect of your life that people often overlook is their homes. Your home should be a reflection of your lifestyle, attitudes and preferences.
Maybe you’ve had your home for a few years, but just haven’t had the time to update it. Or, maybe you’re buying a new home for the new year, you want it to feel like yours. Either way, you don’t have to be an interior designer to revamp your home. Here are my tips on having your home reflect your personality.
1) Use the Same Colour Scheme Throughout the House
A colour scheme is a combination of colours that work well together. Choose a colour scheme that includes one or more of your favourite colours. Incorporate these colours into your furniture, pillows, blankets, curtains and on your walls. You will see your home come to life before your eyes. If you’re struggling to think of a theme, try thinking of words people have used to describe you. spunky, cool, bubbly, or shy, can help you think of colours that reflect your personality. Popular colour schemes for 2021 are cherry and brass, orange cream and deep teal, and sapphire and mustard.
2) Decorate With Your Favourite Artwork
Bare walls may work for a minimalist personality. For big personalities, consider big, bold and colourful paintings. If you have children, put their artwork on the walls. If you’re an artist, put your artwork on the walls. Movie posters are also a great way to showcase your love of movies. If you don’t have a piece of artwork in mind, research online. There are plenty of posts on social media that post different art pieces online. You could also attend auctions or frequent thrift stores for rare finds.
3) Add Memorabilia and Souvenirs
Throughout your life, you’ve probably collected some fun memorabilia and souvenirs. Your favourite sports jersey or tickets may be a unique addition to your walls. Maybe you’re a traveller and have a collection of souvenirs from different cities. These items can also be placed in different spots around your house like the living room, bedroom, or kitchen. When you have guests over, they might even want to know more. Whatever your special hobby is, try to find ways to fit special pieces into your house decor.
4) Take Photos of Friends and Family
Your friends and family are a big part of your life! They’ve helped shape your personality over the years. Your home should showcase their importance to you. Print out copies of your favourite photos and spread them throughout your house. Don’t already have photos? This is the perfect opportunity to gather your friends and family for a fun and creative photo shoot.
Photos are also a great way to make your home feel like your own. It takes time to get used to a new home. These photos can bring you some comfort if you’ve moved far away from your friends and family.
5) Light Scented Candles
Lighting scented candles is a great way to change the atmosphere of a room. Candles can bring a romantic, relaxing, cozy, or even exotic feel to your home. Try lighting a different candle depending on what mood you’re in. Or, light a different candle in each room. Candles are an easy method to brighten a room while adding ambience.
